Moving from a Classic or Essential Life Plan to a Business Life Plan

Discovery Life recently launched the Business Life Plan to provide comprehensive cover, tailored for business needs, along with the best rewards structure.

To make sure existing clients can also take advantage of this tailor-made product offering, we are allowing clients with an existing business assurance Classic or Essential Life Plan to replace it with a Business Life Plan, free of underwriting, if the same level of cover has been selected.

The new policy will be treated as a Discovery Life to Discovery Life replacement, with financial advisers completing the replacement form included in the new business application. The client's Business Life Plan premium will be calculated based on new business rates for the client's current age and there will be no carry-over of benefits, special offers or features that only apply to the Classic and Essential Life Plan (i.e. they are taking out a new policy and will only receive benefits that apply to the Business Life Plan).

As a result, benefits such as the PayBack Fund, in the case of the Classic Life Plan, CoverBooster and Cash Conversions will not be carried over to the Business Life Plan. The Business Life Plan quote will also be subject to our normal new business rules, such as maximum entry ages.

In keeping with normal replacement rules, financial advisers will only receive commission if the premium on the policy increases after the replacement.

Discovery Insure update
SmartTip: Understanding average

It is important for clients to insure their household contents and building for the correct value. The sum insured must be enough to cover the total, current replacement cost of their insured property. If the sum insured is too low, resulting in underinsurance, we will apply average at the time of claim.

Average means that the client will be expected to pay their share of the loss or damage, in proportion to the amount underinsured. For example, if the correct replacement value of the client’s household contents is R600 000 and they have insured it for R300 000 and then have a loss of R100 000, the client will only be covered for 50% (R300 000 / R600 000) of their loss (or R50 000).

The important condition of "Average/under-insurance" is detailed in section 5.4 of the Plan Guide.

Household content tips:

  • If you could turn your house upside down, everything that falls is considered household contents.
  • A couch bought five years ago for R2 000, which costs R5 000 to replace now, needs to be insured for R5 000.
  • Clients can use our inventory assessment tool, available on www.discovery.co.za, to help them assess the total replacement value of their household contents.
  • Clients can also complete an inventory assessment done by our preferred provider and, when they insure their contents accordingly, we will provide them with a No-average guarantee*.

Building value tips:

  • Clients need to insure their building value for the total cost of rebuilding their whole house from scratch, plus any additional rubble removal costs if their entire house burns down.
  • In many instances estate agent values and municipal values are too low for insurance purposes.
  • Clients can use our building value calculator tool, available on www.discovery.co.za, to help them assess the total value of their building for comprehensive insurance purposes

*To make sure a client’s no-average guarantee is maintained, they will need to:

  • Insure their household contents for the agreed amount
  • Update their sum insured within 30 days of all new purchases.

Clients will be charged a fee for having the inventory assessment done at their home (if the sum insured is less than R1.5 million) and it applies only to household contents. If your clients want cover for items they carry and wear outside their home, they will need to select this under the portable possessions section of cover.

"Team Vitality is more than just a running or cycling club, it’s an initiative to help get people active. It’s about encouraging people to get off the couch and into the race," says Fordyce, who spearheaded the parkrun movement in South Africa. "This is why it’s so important – it helps people see that you can do it, whoever you are, as long as you take that crucial first step."

Discovery Vitality’s relationship with celebrity athletic figureheads like the Nurgalieva twins, Elana Meyer and Bruce Fordyce means members have the opportunity to interact and learn from these athletes. “Through our collaboration with these well-known sportspeople we are able to offer our members direct access to tried-and-tested health and fitness tips, pre-race training guidance, and post-race recovery advice – plus the added inspiration associated with this calibre of athlete.”
