Fraudsters are posing as South African Police Services (SAPS) officers to scam people.
Beware of a scam where someone calls pretending to be a SAPS officer. They'll give you a fake badge number and claim that illegal activities are linked to your ID number. Then, they'll transfer you to "senior officer" who pressures you to send money to a fake SAPS account. The call usually comes from a private or untraceable number, and they often use threats to scare you into complying. Don't fall for it!
What you can do
- Stay calm and verify their identity by calling the SAPS station they claim to be from.
- Never transfer money or give banking details over the phone.
- Call us immediately on 011 324 4444 if in doubt.
Note: SAPS will never demand money to drop a case or prevent an arrest.
